Support & Respite

Support & Respite

Taking breaks and arranging the right support helps protect your wellbeing and sustain safe caring.

Choosing the Right Support Service

The right service depends on both your needs and those of the person you care for.

Types of support include:

  • Home care

  • Sitting services

  • Day centres

  • Specialist disability support

  • Community groups

Before choosing a provider, ask:

  • Are staff trained appropriately?

  • Is support flexible?

  • What happens in emergencies?

  • How are concerns raised?

In England, inspection reports are available through the Care Quality Commission.

Short Breaks & Replacement Care

Short breaks (respite) give you time to rest or manage other responsibilities.

This may include:

  • A few hours of home support

  • Day services

  • Overnight or residential respite

You can request a Carer’s Assessment to explore eligibility for funded breaks.

Direct Payments & Personal Budgets

If funding is agreed, you may receive:

  • A Personal Budget (allocated funding)

  • Direct Payments (money paid to you to arrange care)

This can be used to:

  • Employ a personal assistant

  • Pay a care agency

  • Arrange short breaks

You may be required to keep financial records.

Using Services Confidently

  • Agree a clear care plan

  • Maintain open communication

  • Raise concerns early

  • Review support if needs change

You have the right to safe, respectful and reliable care.

When Services Aren’t Working

If problems arise:

  1. Speak to the provider

  2. Use their complaints procedure

  3. Contact your local authority (if funded)

  4. Report serious safety concerns to the Care Quality Commission

If someone is at immediate risk, contact emergency services.
